Play Battle City Tank Wars Online

June 17, 2008 in Featured Articles

Battle City is a free action and strategy online tank wars game. Players build, defend and attack cities in an endless quest for control and dominance. The main objective is to keep your city alive while destroying as many others as you can. The more you destroy, the more points you earn!

Battle City Capture the Flag Event

Battle City is a game requiring a great deal of strategy. To win you must drop the Orb item on the enemy cities Command Center. The Command Center is always heavily guarded so teamwork will be essential. You will need to bomb buildings and destroy defensive infrastructure using the weapons produced by the factories in your city.

You begin ranked as a Private and earn promotions based on how many points you gain. Work your way up to the rank of General by Orbing cities and blowing up tanks!

Another aspect of Battle City which makes the game very interesting is that you can play as either a Mayor or a Commando. If you are the Mayor, it is your job to build the city and hire Commandos. If you are a Commando, it is your job to defend your Mayors city and to attack enemy cities! A city can have only one mayor, so if parts of the base are destroyed in battle, only the mayor can make repairs. Each city can have a maximum of three commandos! As you can imagine, teamwork is an incredibly important aspect of Battle City!

Micropolis is an open source sim game based on the original code from SimCity. It was donated to the One Laptop per Child project by Electronic Arts under the GNU General Public License agreement. Micropolis is developed by Don Hopkins and has been available as open source since January 10th 2008.

If you’re interested in working with the code and creating your own SimCity game, visit the Micropolis Wiki Page. All the details you need in order to get started are listed on this Wiki page.

If you’d like additional help getting started, check out this great series by Bil Simser.

Don Hopkins is currently translating the source code to C++. This C++ version, known as Micropolis Core, is still a work in progress. The game itself is not yet playable, but you can scroll and zoom around the map. Visit the Micropolis project page on Google Code to see the latest news or to download the latest code for this version.
